Why would an international banker retire early, at the peak of his career, to fly as a volunteer missionary over the Brazilian ? And where did he get the money to donate a two million dollar airplane? He might be running drugs from Colombia or smuggling gems from the rich rocks of Minas Gerais. Many Brazilians believed the American missionaries were CIA spies. There had to be a reason.

Flying for Jesus Lee Darrel Carver 9780615877327 Books

This inspiring true-to-life book follows the Carvers through Darrell's successful career and assignments all over the world while taking his family with him. A pilot in his early years, he later became a successful bank executive. But he had a dream -- to fly again. As he maintained his faith in countries often hostile to Christianity, he had a yearning to do more. After two decades, his dream and his yearnings met and meshed. Upon retirement, he became a pilot and missionary in the often hostile jungles of Brazil. He and wife, Lee, faced challenges and broke down barriers together as they finally were able to live their dream.

This book was simply and clearly written. It does not dramatize. It shares the ups and downs of dreaming and what it is like to finally live that dream.

Flying for Jesus Lee Darrel Carver 9780615877327 Books Reviews

Took me to places I had never considered and made me aware of the determination and dedication of these Christian soldiers.
I found it very interesting to watch as God orchestrated the transition of this talented couple from the world of international business to the world of international missions. The author allows the reader to join in the real life experiences they faced in doing so while leaving no doubt that God had the whole process rigged. Indeed they chose the road less traveled and in so doing were instrumental in introducing many to the privilege of knowing and praising our glorious God in this life and throughout all eternity.
I've known Lee Carver as a fellow writer who attends the same meetings I do, but never really knew her past history. She tells it well in this interesting narrative. Nice job, Lee.
I really appreciated the Carvers desire to follow God wherever He led them. Their personal experiences of God's divine leading, healing and love is encouraging. May we all be attuned to our Creator, desiring to follow Him.
Very challenging example of a couple who succeed both in a long secular career and then finance a wonderful contribution to a needy part of the world as a missionary flying couple. This book gives a great account of how all the details work out and how the prayers are answered along with many of the great adventures they had down in the jungle.
I grew up in the same small Alabama town in which Lee Carver did. While we were not close friends, I did know that she and her husband had made some major personal sacrifices to answer God's call to their joint ministry in the . However, I only knew vague details and had no idea of the intensity of their calling or the physical and health hardships they both endured to answer that calling.

Make no mistake, this is not some hokey story told by someone who can't write. This story is beautifully and professionally told through third person POV...Afterall the writer and her husband do have servants' hearts, so third person should not have been an unexpected point of view.

This book is being sold as non-profit so it is truly accessible to everyone. I bought the e-Book and before I finished reading it, I had ordered copies for friends, who have now told their friends, who've told their friends. I'm now getting emails from former residents of our little town, telling me about Lee Carver's book. I can only hope that this book receives the broader readership it deserves....

I reviewed traditionally published books, non-fiction and fiction, for the Mobile (AL) Press-Register Living Arts book page from 2004 until late 2012. FLYING FOR JESUS is one of THE best and most well-written books I have read in the past few years. If Lee and Darrel have not previously submitted to Thomas Nelson for publication, I hope they will pray long and hard about that possiblilty.

An award-winning military love story and mystery
Many people wondered why Darrell Carver, who held a successful international banking position, retired at age fifty-five. “Was he ill?” some asked. When he ended up flying dentists, nurses and doctors along the , others questioned if it was a front for drug smuggling. Some of the Brazilians thought the he and his wife, Lee, were with the CIA. Darrell and Lee wrote Flying for Jesus to explain the faith journey that led them to the as missionaries.
What began as an answer to the questions of others ended up as a wonderful witness for God, showing two people asking God to show them His will, following the answers given them and going through doors opened to them. It also gives the reader an interesting look into missionary life and the hardships, heartache and illness that can go with it as well as the joy reaped. Reading it, I felt as though I was in the . I highly recommend it.
