Arriving in China in 1900, at the age of twenty-six, Martha is sent to teach mathamatics, and eventually English, at Foochow College for boys. During her years in Foochow (Fuzhou) she also championed independence for Chinese women, providing education and vocational training for both girls and adults. By sponsoring several of her students Martha enabled their continued education in the United States. One of those graduates, Chen Shao Kwan, went on to become supreme commander of the Chinese Navy. He was also a lifelong friend.

From the fall of the last dynasty through the rise of Communism, Martha shares her hard-won victories and heartfelt defeats with a keen intellect, an ever-evolving compassion, and a wry wit. This remarkable story weaves a vivid tapestry of history and humanity revealing how one woman's dedication and perseverance can promote great change.

This is a great book for reading in short doses, but I had a hard time putting it down, because the letters in the book were selected from a large family collection to provide a diary-like flow of events throughout this American teacher's long career in China. The description of events gives the reader an excellent, literate trip (often with subdued excitement) through developments in the first half of the 20th century as China moved from a warlord society through the populist efforts of Sun Yat Sen to the dictatorial regime of Chang Kai Shek, World War II and on to the beginning of Mao's communization, and the daily lives of rural Chinese. It's a history book, the history of a way of life affected by larger political and social changes.
The production quality of this book is first rate: a strong, attractive binding, no typographical errors. It deserves to be kept on your bookshelf.

"Letters from the Dragon's Head" is the edited collection of letters Margaret Wiley wrote to relatives and friends from China between 1900 and 1947.
A Yakima native with a degree from the University of Washington went to China to teach mathematics and English at Foochow College.Martha soon discovered that education in China was for men only, and women were property with no future. In her spare time, with her own money and donations from friends and relatives, Martha established a school for young women. They learned hygiene, cooking and cleaning skills along
with reading and writing and learned to think and dream. Martha was a foreign woman with foreign ideas.With funds solicited from relatives, friends and church in America she sent students to study abroad and return to teach and work at the college. She loved China and it's people. She adopted a family and helped anyone in need, and made friends and enemies. Times were difficulty, but grew worse after Japan invaded China. Her letters describe the bombing by the Japanese, and the shortages of food and medical supplies, but Martha's faith in her work never wavered.In 1947 Martha went home for a short visit and rest. Mao and the communists took control of China. The State Department would not reissue her passport. The communist government confiscated the school and Martha's home. Martha's pension was $75.00 per month which would have been adequate in China wouldn't pay her rent in America so Martha went back to teaching in Piney Woods, Mississippi.Martha died in 1979 and never wrote her book. Pat Langhorn and her daughter Kathy (relatives of Martha) decided to compile and edit the letters Martha wrote home, and we now have the "Best of Martha" in a book I could read again and again. What a great human being Martha Wiley was I hope one day to read about Martha in the University of Washington alumni news (Columns) as she should be acknowledged as one of the outstanding graduates of the University. Love, Love, Love, this book for so many reasons. It is a very easy to read true account of its time. Something is learned about China in the 1900's everytime a page is turned. This book can be read as it was written, in sections.(I'm so busy sometimes only a 20 minute slot is open.) I find myself actually reading slower so it will last longer. Savoring the moment so to speak. While Martha Wiley transports you back to China in the 1900's, she also gives you a excellent view on the 1900's mindset of an American woman. There aren't enough of these type of books published, at least not this well written. Love, Love, Love this book!
I'm a fiction reader, BUT my book club introduced this book to our group so I reluctantly decided to be a good sport and read it. Astonishing! They "had me" with the first letter written relatives by this amazing woman of grit, courage, wit, strength and independence. This should be made into a movie. The authors selected most interesting letters that collectively tell her story and is an easy read to be savored each time you pick up the book. The descriptions of life experienced (endured at times) is shocking, even jarring, as she seemed very casual and nonchalant as if seeing lepers, snakes, or dead bodies in wells, was a normal part of life! I would have been on the first transportation home. This is a history lesson, human interest story, women's rights story, with inspirational messages, drama, humor and adventure rolled into a true account of one rare jewel of a human being. The only thing missing is sex, drugs and rock and roll. (actually two of those components are included)

Martha Wiley was one of those unique human beings able to immerse herself in the potent mix of cultural and political turmoil in a third world country. Granted she was a product of her time and culture, a missionary trying to convert heathens, but her primary motive was to serve and help those in need. She channeled resources from the US to China for many years to mitigate the poverty, ignorance and suffering of the Chinese. The many photographs and timetables in this book make it easy to follow the narrative of Martha’s letters. The letters give you the feel for the struggles and the uncertainty of a woman working in China under famine, pestilence, and on-going war. It is an amazing testament to a single woman’s love, courage and dedication to the Chinese people. This is an amazing account will reward the reader with vivid descriptions of what life was like in Chine before communism.
